I can understand in relationships, but in life?
If this is a silently-accepted truth, then why don't teachers preface this and say only good-looking kids can have good careers?
I want to be a corporate lawyer, but I am bombarded with these surveys stating that I am statistically screwed and should plan my own premature funeral.
I want to get ahead in life because I intellectually deserve it.
But am I not worth-it because of the pre-determined genetic make-up?
Why does everyone say looks matter but then so many refute that statement?
Hillary is running for President, right?
Remember Margaret Thatcher?
Golda Meir?
There are a zillion other examples. So, no excuses!
Besides, you look just fine.
Reply:Basically, its like this. Anything in extreme matters. For those who are ugly as sin and rank in the 1-3 range, life will always suck for things like career, romance, etc. For those who are a 9-10, life is easier, but depending on their character, it can also suck. For example, do people love them for who they are or just because of the way they look? Did they get that big promotion because they are hot, or because they actually have the skills and talents to deserve it? They generally have no idea and that can be depressing to think that the only way you are viewed is as eye-candy and little more.
However, for the rest of us that are in the "average" range (or above-average and below-average) looks do not really matter.
What is going to make you "not worth it" is going to be how you present yourself. No matter what you say about yourself and how you "act" around others, your real feelings about yourself will come through and you will seem like a poor candidate for things in life...be it a job, a promotion, or a romantic partner. Things like confidence, healthy self-esteem, etc. can be detected by people and those are the ones most people gravitate towards.
Reply:That's unreasonably cynical. Looks don't matter as much as you're saying they do. Have you seen some of the ugly people who've accomplished great things?
Reply:such a long question
