Hello, in other posts I have asked at computing careers. I am very interested in working from home and making decent money. I'm not looking for survey/stupid little ways to make money. I'm talking about a real career, whether its computer programming, computer science, graphics design, game design, website design, anything to do with a computer. (PS Im interested in all of these plus more so don't be afraid to suggest more). All I'm looking for is a comfortable life style with no debt. Not a get-rich-quick scheme. Thanks! (PSS Suggest degrees for the careers you talk about). (PSSS Someone explain to me if network marketing is legit.)
Best stay at home computing career?
Here's the problem
Most software developers/graphic design companies are using offshore (India, Russia, China) to write and troubleshoot code (sw) because their rates are rsubstanially cheaper than US wages (even for stay at home workers). So unless you are able to find a company that is a start up, where they want to keep a tight hold on their intellectual property, finding any programming job is hard, finding one where you can work at home unless you live very close by, is even harder.
You could try to find a larger web site designer to see if they have any contract work, but that wont be steady.
If you are on the west coast, your odds of working for one of the IT or silicon valley companies (apple, microsoft, Sun, oracle) are higher because that's where their corporate offices are, and most of their development staff. You could always sent them a resume with your education and experience, and offer to do freelance trouble shooting. It will come down to your knowledge and experience in the languages/platforms they use, ie Windows, .Net, Java, etc.
Education wise, a comp sci degree is preferred, with business, and marketing as secondary skills.
Network marketing may be legit, but you will not make any money.
Hope that helps
Reply:You sound like a very intelligent person indeed. Let me offer some advice. ANY career that is IT-based, be prepared to change jobs at least every 5 to 10 years because technology changes faster than we can keep up with it.
A huge portion of tech is trendy and trends come and go really quickly so you must keep your head on and watch out.
To answer your concern about network marketing. YES it is legit.
Just like everything in life, there's good about it and bad about it.
The bad??? It's been given MANY bad names over the years because of the way MOST network marketers go about business...They don't even treat it like a business. They try to shove high priced products down your throat and try to make you feel like a real loser if you say no to their offer. Many people think it's a Ponzi or Pyramid scheme because there have been some programs that have come along under the guise of network marketing that were actually scams. Network marketing requires discipline and a proven SYSTEM that you can just plug into, for the AVERAGE person to achieve success.
The Good...
Network marketing is the BEST way to do business in the world. Why? Its success depends on how well you do something that you've been doing since you could talk and walk. You go see a movie, you like it...obviously you tell all your friends about it...they either choose to go see it or not, you don't really care. However the movie theater doesn't really pay you for promoting their movie. In network marketing, that's exactly what you get paid for...word of mouth promotion of whatever your product/service is.
Now many companies have awesome products and so the marketers use lots of hype to promote and most people don't like hype...therefore they struggle to build their businesses.
Another great thing about network marketing is that they're usually CHEAP to start and it may only cost between $50 to $200 per month to be considered as 'active'. I started my first venture for $35 and my current one is $29...affordable for most people I believe. The earning potential with most NWMarketing companies is infinite. Some companies pay commissions like 5% of $100 while others pay out 40% of $50. The reasons for this I won't mention here but these are some of the things to find out BEFORE you join ANY NWM company.
The list of things to consider whether a company is right for you or not, cannot fit here.
I'll appreciate a private message if you want to get more info on choosing companies and identifying schemes etc...I know a few people and resources where you can really get educated on the topic and I have some literature as well that explains network marketing in simple terms for ANYone to understand fully.
Any more questions I'll be glad to answer.
Reply:Hello
I do know the network marketing business That I am involved with is a legit business. Not sure if all are though. I have partnered with a company that is a member of the BBB No inventory, No selling - sharing information - network marketing - I am a member of a couple of network groups in my local area and it is working and does work with what business I am with. We do not offer any get rich quick scheme. Business start up is \$29.00. Any legit business will have some sort of start up cost for a business portfolio. I wouldn't mind sharing more information if you would like. We can talk over the phone or through IM - to much to try to type an email without knowing your exact interests or questions. The company I am with is always looking for motivated, coachable, trainable people looking to work. We offer a free website and free trainings to anyone interested in joining our team.

Reply:Website design can be done from home. You can obtain a Sole Proprietor business license, dedicated phone/fax line and create your own website to generate business for relatively cheap. You can also be a Virtual Assistant. Whatever you decide to do, you should commit to a small investment even if it is just to be trained for what you want to do. Large companies like Boeing and Microsoft hire virtual/telecommuters as computer software engineers but these positions are few and far between. Look into submitting your resume to Staffing Agencies and specify that you would like to work from home. Also, check out Craigslist in your area. Here are some legit work-from-home websites and training you may want to check out:
