Manga survey! Please help me!?

no, I'm American
to me, anime and manga is entertainment, I expect it to entertain me and if it doesn't live up to those expectations then it's nothing to me and I move on (I'm very picky about what I chose to waste my time on lol)
the difference between them simple: manga are Japanese graphic novels, anime are Japanese cartoons, there's a lot of crossover but the relationship between the two is pretty much just like that between American graphic novels and cartoons
I prefer manga, it's more artsy and a purer expression of the artist's vision, less hampered by the monetary risk of producing it because as cheep as anime is to make, manga's cheeper, that and I like to read between the lines and manga leaves more to the imagination...also, a book doesn't require the use of a tv so it's a lot easier for me to find the opportunity to enjoy it
I know some of the mangaka's names, but for me it's all about the story
I keep up with several manga series at a time, they only come out every few months or so and at just $10 a volume it's not that expensive
I used to buy anime, but I haven't recently, it comes out so often and it's so expensive! I'd still buy a series that I was a big fan of (I rent from Netflix now) but only in the cheepest version possible, taking quality into account, of course
I'm sure it's popular in the right circles and it certainly seems like it's getting more so, someday I'm sure that'll change though and those of us who really appreciate it will be the ones to suffer
Borders, Hastings, or Amazon.com for manga, depending on how fast I've got to have it, whether or not I can find it, and how much I'm willing to pay (Amazon's cheepest with free shipping on orders over $25, in case you're interested), Best Buy or Amazon.com for anime on those rare occasions I buy it anymore
I like the artistic style, if an anime or manga doesn't have a certain asthetic, it usually doesn't really appeal to me. also in the case of manga it absolutely has to be read from right to left. there's no worse crime against manga than when it gets flipped! (partly because it's just not right, partly because I just hate having to constantly remember which way I'm supposed to be reading it...selfish of me perhaps, but I'm just used to reading right to left now) then there's also the obvious cultural differences that give manga and anime a distinctly foreign feel
I prefer manga. nothing against them, I've just never read American graphic novels. now, after reading manga for so many years, it just doesn't...click, you know? that and the afore mentioned difficulty of switching back and forth between right to left and left to right
that depends entirely upon which age group it was written for, most of the stuff I read is rated OT or T+, 16 and up, but of course that's the content rating (not really PG-13 but not quite R either, to put it in more familiar terms) just like with movies, the stories themselves sometimes have a much broader appeal...or not, again it depends who it was written for (you have to rememer that anime and manga are actually very broad terms that refer to a wide range of styles, genres, and ratings)
hm, well, if you want to be a mangaka first you'll have to move to Japan, otherwise I suggest you give up on that dream and just resign yourself to being a graphic novelist who happens to have been inspired by manga, there's nothing wrong with that you know
most manga ads I see are either in the backs of the manga themselves or else on the websites I check to see when the next release date is, the anime ads I see are either on the anime DVDs or sometimes on the tv stations that have decided to jump on the bandwagon, like Cartoon Network or more recently Sci-Fi
sure there are opportunities in the graphic novel industry, but you have to be a really good writer or animator (or better yet, both)
I like like a good (emphasis on good) manga or anime, usually (but not always) with a fantastic twist, I read and watch series from all of those catagories and most of them actually have a lot of crossover elements which is what keeps them interesting
sry, I guess I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to my entertainment (all of it really, books, movies, even tv shows). I just hate that feeling of finding out that I've wasted my valuable and limited R%26amp;R time on something that wasn't really worth it when there are so many things out there that are, you know? it's forced me to be very...particular about what I choose to invest my time and money in, and therefore very opinionated about it, too. :-)

*they are both wonderful forms of entertainment
*most anime programs are based off of manga
*manga
*no, if you are referring to celebrities
*yes, only the Saiyuki series; the first day it becomes available for sale
*yes; a dvd once or twice a month if it is available and I like the program
*yes; diversity, appeals to all people, great storylines and characters
*amazon or Best Buy for anime; Borders, Barnes %26amp; Nobles, or Amazon for manga
*action, comedy, age range of main characters (I prefer manga that have adult characters)
*manga
*all age groups; manga is not classified for one particular age range or particular group. It is for all to enjoy.
*I'm not particularly fond of American "manga artist". I refer to them as just comic book novices. I'm not sure what is out there for Americans to become manga artists. The Japanese rule that form of entertainment.
*in the retail market, no. On the web, yes (anime board forums and anime online stores mostly)
*it all depends on what position you are seeking. An artist, slim (you have to be REALLY good and have the right connections). US based marketing, distribution, the chances are higher.
*action/comedy (straight characters..no yaoi)

Manga is print, anime is TV/Movie
Manga, as I think you can do more with the comic approach than the animated
No, I really can't name a soul.
I buy manga, but not so much anime, as I have an on-demand section of my cable provider, so I can catch an episode or two
Let's be serious, the most noticible feature are the women with big boobs.
Both have their assests and liabilities, so it is even.
Manga targets not an age but an attitude
No, there is certainly not enough sources out there.
When I go to places like Suncoast, I see manga pushed. I also get a catalog to Rose Comics, where manga is pushed, as well as anime
I prefer mixed genre: fantasy comedy, romance action, romacne fantasy action, historical comedy
Reply:-Age: Young enough to look at, but far too old to see
-Sex: Male
-Born and live in USA.
-Manga/Anime: Both Japanese. First is printed, second animated. Have no preference one over the other.
-Katsumiro Otomo, ( Akira) Hayao Miyazaki, (Nausicaa)Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub), off the top of my head.
-No. I have some favorite/well known manga in my collection, but I don't currently buy.
-No. I grew up with such cartoons as Speed Racer and Kimba as well as shows like Voltron or Johnny Socko. Like manga, I have some favorite/famous DVD's in my collection, but rarely buy.
-I think both are very popular at the moment and the medium offer things that may not be present in US comics and toons.
-Many US stores like Borders, Barnes %26amp; Noble or Books A Million carry manga (or anime, depending on the store.) Best Buy and Circuit City both carry anime. Assorted free-lance comics stores may carry both.
-Not sure/ depends on the series. Currently, stuff like Naruto is quite popular, featuring young characters with big eyes and spiky hair having magical battles. A lot of current popular manga and anime has got a little too young or cute for my tastes. (Not that there's anything wrong with that).
-I can go either way depending on the story and art, but lean toward American.
-Once again, depends on the series. Much of the popular stuff now seems aimed at teens, but there is matieral out there aimed at older audiences.
-Depending on the material, I see manga/anime advertised in magazines , TV or film trailers.
-As for job oppurtunities, I don't know. I'm sure there are schools or internships out there...but perhaps not in US or Austalia. Most comics schools I've seen advertised seem to focus on the art without any special focus.
I like all genres, but sci-fi, fantasy and horror are faves.
