Military Spouses, how long does it take for you to achieve a college degree?

Has relocating played a significant role in hindering your college career? How many years, and how many schools have you attended? This is for a college survey.

Military Spouses, how long does it take for you to achieve a college degree?
Depends if attending college full time or part time. My wife finished AA while we were stationed in Hawaii. I finished AA and started BA in a different university while stationed there on active duty.
Reply:I started my degree before my husband and I were married. I had one year done when I married him. When we got married and I moved to Ft Polk, LA, I took a semester off. We PCSed soon after that and I started back up at a new college. I went to school pretty much full time, and I over-loaded on courses when my husband was deployed. It helped keep me busy and kept my mind off of missing hubby. It took me 3 1/2 years to get my bachelor's degree, but I took classes every summer too, so it was more like 10 or 11 semesters. I also took advantage of online courses and CLEP tests.

Relocating did cause me a little bit of trouble. I lost a lot of credits when I transferred, because they only counted them as electives. I graduated with 20+ extra credit hours than what I really needed. But because I overloaded my schedule and took classes every summer, I still graduated in less than 4 years. I also didn't have kids or a job, which many military wives do, so I had a lot of time to myself, especially since my husband was deployed 2 of the 3 1/2 years I was in college.
Reply:The degree I am doing now will probably take me three years as I can only do one unit per semester (4 per year). I have already got a BA in Psych and had to postpone my honours as we moved away from my university and then I had a baby. Decided to do another degree until I can return. Relocating plays a big part in hindering my university career as I don't have the support of family and friends nearby to help me especially around assignments and exams as I have noone to babysit for study time when my husband is away. Hopefully I will get to do my honours in the next few years but it is hard and frustrating that your dreams have to get put on hold due to the military. Such is life.
