Does anyone know about land surveying as a career?

What is the required education? I can't stand the idea of a regular job. I luv trig and being outside... I'm going to go to an information seminar but I am wondering does the license require a two or four year degree in Tx? - the more you know, the better!!

Does anyone know about land surveying as a career?
Well I'm a licensed civil engineer, not a land surveyor, but I've done a lot of surveying and worked with PLS's. I think it's a great career choice. I try and get out in the field as much as possible too. The surveyors I've worked with really like their jobs and make good money, especially if they're licensed. Each state has different licensing requirements. Here's the link to Texas's:

A career in surveying, with no experience - where to begin?

I graduated last year with a degree in Real Estate Management (RICS accreditted) and i now want to start my APC. Every employer out there (that iv come accross) wants someone with some experience. i have none, but i feel that i am more than capable of success in the field. Does anyone know of any firms that would be prepared to give me a chance to prove myself?

A career in surveying, with no experience - where to begin?
Proving your worth to an employer when you have no experience or evidence of success is never easy, but there are a few ways around it.

Firstly there are many transferable skills that are applicable across job roles and industries. You could try taking on a temporary role in a similar function to try and give more weight to your CV.

Secondly, if it's viable, you could offer to work for free for a short period. This shows the employer you're really serious about wanting the job and that you're willing to sacrifice your time initially in order to get some long term gain.

Finally you could try getting an alternative role within the company you want to work for. Many positions are filled by internal moves so you'll already have a head start when the position you really want becomes available.

Take a look below at the totaljobs.com 'Transferable Skills' article and our new 'Graduate Zone'

Good luck with your search

Reply:If only people with experience were hired, no one would have a job: that first opportunity in a field is always without experience. I suspect you haven't contacted that many employers... I'm guessing less than 20. When you've contacted 1000 (and I'm not exaggerating with that last zero to make a thousand), you'll find plenty who will hire you. I suggest an intensive mail campaign to 1000 potential employers with a powerful resume and letter of introduction. Be sure your materials are flawless... have more than one person proof-read your resume and letter of introduction. Perhaps asking a friendly college professor to help you word it just right (and be sure to list him or her as a reference as well). I've actually done this, so I can assure you it's a numbers game in finding a position... and it's not really that expensive when you consider how many contacts you'll be making. Try a goal of mailing out your first hundred in the first week, your second hundred in the second week, etc. You may find you won't have to mail out a thousand before someone finds you of interest. Good luck.

What are the best survey methods for the development and retention of participants in research studies?

I'm trying to find the best method of conducting a survey for community members to be involved and informed about clinical research so that their responses can help future research and/or they will be inspired to pursue a health- related career.

What are the best survey methods for the development and retention of participants in research studies?
There is not a simple answer to this question because more information is needed about this population. I took a survey methodolgy class and choosing a method depends on many factors.

For example, another person said internet surveys are best. But how will you get community members to access the survey? Do you have all of their email addresses to send them a link? Is the internet appropriate for the type of questions you're asking? Since internet is self administered, there won't be a researcher present if the participants have questions or are unsure how to respond.

Depending on your situation, internet might be the best option but it might not be. Or you might want to used mixed methods.

I recommend that you check out a survey methods book and then make an educated decision. Don Dillman is a trusted name in the field - I recommend him highly.
Reply:I worked on a research study where we used an online survey instrument and had tremendous success with it. Now, I'm liberal arts so I don't know all the specifics of programming (we had a tech guy set it up for us), but the software was very user-friendly and once we set it up and harvested the emails we wanted to use, it sent them out in mass quantities. We could log on and track changes; it even had options for creating graphs and other data organizers directly from the raw data. Of course it could perform some statistical functions that were way over my head as well!

Long story short: I think an online survey would go over very well. It's convenient for participants and easy for you as the researcher to view results.

Hope this helps!

What are some good sites that can help choose a career to pursuit?

I'm going into my senior year in high school and i have a couple ideas of what i might want to do but i'm not sure yet... I was never really one of those kids that knew exactly what i wanted to do... I'm searching for a good website that will be able to help me out; possibly one with a survey or something that narrows down careers by my interests or something, but any advice is fine also. Thanks.

Is the land surveying career really a good money making job?

For as far as im concern, i don't get enough pay in this field though..

Is the land surveying career really a good money making job?
It depends very much on where you are working.

If you work in New York City, or Los Angeles, or some other high priced places, you will make a lot more than you will if you are working out in a rural area.

In order to make the best money, you must also become a licensed professional. Until you become licensed, you will probably not make enough money to be satisfied.

How do you feel about those personality surveys that can determine the fate of your career?

We have all done it. You see a job that you feel you would be perfect for. You submit your resume. You get past the initial screening. Next you receive the dreaded personality survey with the misleading, repetitive questions that will probably knock you out of the running for being among the remaining qualified candidates. We have to summarize complex answers into the confines of "strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree"

Do you really think this is an accurate method for screening job candidate?

Also, does anyone have any particular techniques that they use when faced with these questions?

Juuust wondering.

How do you feel about those personality surveys that can determine the fate of your career?
I don't think that they really help because they say one thing but what you can do is another... It is really what your heart says not what a piece of paper does...
Reply:I think a lot of people lie, but those surveys are just too long. I usually end up screwing up some of the questions because I am sick of reading them and don't read the question right.
Reply:Most of the time, you can predict the answer they want. You'd be surprised how many people answer "agree" to a question like "I have taken small items in the past, but would not take anything now." That alone shows you may lack integrity and might, if tempted, take something from your boss. You go in the "High Risk" or "RED FLAG" category and you'll not be hired.

Other questions are like "I tried drugs once, but I don't use them now." An honest Strongly Agree or Agree will tag you as a Potential Drug User and there you go again HIGH RISK.

The questionaires are a fairly accurate prediction of the way you will behave once you're an employee. While they may not seem so to you (that's the way they're designed to seem), they are very scientific questions based on past performance by individuals.

I was told that you should answer EVERYTHING either STRONGLY AGREE or esle STRONGLY DISAGREE.......there should not be any middle of the road. If you read the question and "think" they are looking for an agree answer, don't say "slightly agree" or "neither agree or disagree", you need to STRONGLY AGREE. Same thing if you think they are looking for a disagree answer.

Some examples of tests I have administered to job applicants:

I believe that low wages and poor living conditions can make an honest person take things sometimes. --Correct answer: strongly disagree. [Indicates if you would be inclined to steal if times got hard or if the opportunity was great enough]

There is no difference between smoking marajuana and drinking alcohol. --Correct answer: strongly disagree [Because marajuana is ILLEGAL and alcohol isn't--looking for your permissive attitude toward using drugs].

You should not publicaly expose a person who is caught stealing. --Correct answer: strongly disagree. [Seeing if you would be sympathetic to a thief and perhaps not tell on him]

I have been late to work in the past, but that is behind me now. --Correct answer: strongly disagree. [Looking for tardiness or attendance prone people]

Some workers know more than their supervisors. --Correct answer: strongly disagree. [Looking for how well you respect authority]

Each question is looking for a trait you possess. They are pretty reliable. If you always answer truthfully, you may not get the job. You have to play the game.

I need help in making a career/course choice for college next year!?
hey buddy,I think you should go with your heart and passion for a career choice ! If by some chance you're not sure weigh the pros and cons . You never know though, alot of college men and women have changed their minds in the major they were going for so try not to stress too much -k-. as far as links go try contacting or go to the college and check out the career centers if you are not close to a college then call a high school and talk to a career or guidance counselor and ask them for a good place too start!!!!!:)
Reply:i think you will find that you have to take many broad general courses in many different majors. from there, you can choose what you really want to study for the next 3 years and get hopefully a job using that degree.
Reply:You may want to consider becoming a pharmacist! Why?

PROS

1) Takes as little as 5 years to complete a pharmacy degree after high school

2) Flexible working hours, you can work 9-5 or do a 7 on and 7 off system

3) Starting pay can be anywhere from 75-150k depending on location and need

4) You can literally get a job anywhere in the US because of the short supply and great demand of pharmacists

5) You will have time to start a family

1a You don't mind getting up in the morning and going to work

1b at least make enough money to live on

1c at least a mild interest in what you do

2a Dreading going to work every day

2b can't live on salary

2c Can't stand the people I work with

3 own a bike shop; I love racing and riding bicycles. I define myself more in terms of Being a bike racer over what I do for a living.

4 No

not at all but I'm kind of a tech head, I've always interested in science, engineering and physics and that part of me fits with my job.

I'm not in my ultimate career because it doesn't pay. This is where the realization of life hits. Someone asked a question on here about having a degree in Theater and not being able to find a job. The responses were great, mine was "This is a perfect example of what people want to do and what people actually get paid to do" The funniest response was "Awh come on you had to see that one coming" Very very few people actually make a living from the theater and even fewer live at a median income. So it all comes down to money.

5 like I said before I don't define my self by a "career". I define myself through my daughter, bike racing, friends, etc. My "career" or "job" is a means to facilitate those things. So what's important to me in a "career" is:

1 pays the bills with enough left over for the pursuit of real life

2 I have at least a mild interest and skill

3 I don't hate where I work.

6. I went to school and took LASER's and Electronics. I liked them and was interested in them and they are marketable skills. So If you love something that pays well go for it. If you love something that doesn't pay then go to school for the next best thing that does pay and make your love your hobby or past time. Or for example like the theater person, if they like math and money they could have become a CPA and went to work for a theater and wormed their way from there. Remember your degree(s) don't mean anything if you can't eat! Passion doesn't pay the bills

You are not defined by your degrees and careers but by the type of people you surround yourself with and in how you treat them.
Reply:Hi, I'm retired now however I was in marine related employment for the whole of my wage earning career.

My first degree ruined my favorite hobby needless to say.

After being out of school and trying out multiple jobs... i realized what I really wanted to be.

Is there a good survey on the net that will help me pick a career based on my personality, likes and dislikes?

The Myers Briggs test can give you a good idea of what you may excel at based upon your personality. Also, most resume sites (careerbuilder.com and monster.com) have different things that can indicate what you'll be good at. However, the best indicator of a good career is your own opinion. Do a little research about things you are interested in (History, Literature, Art, Business, Math, etc.) and then find different careers within those fields.

Is there a good survey on the net that will help me pick a career based on my personality, likes and dislikes?
Princeton Review has an ok free one. You have to register on the site first. I prefer it to the tests you can do at a community college because all the career choices require a decent amount of education/training. Some tests will have results such as bus driver, etc.

Is there a website (survey) that narrows down what you should do in life career wise?

I'm currently majoring in English though I don't want to teach and I am in my third year ... do you know of a program or website that tells you what you would be best at or might enjoy?

Is there a website (survey) that narrows down what you should do in life career wise?
go to ask.com and ask hem ur question they defenitaly can help u

Is there a survey you can take to determin what career is right for you?

My son is a sophomore in college already, is wanting to change his major, but not real sure where to turn. It's a long story, but he wanted nursing originally, couldn't get in with that major, declaired surgical tech instead, was on deans list for whole year, decided to declair nursing second year of college and was accepted, however 70% of his class is failing (within nursing terms C or lower) and is so discouraged he wants to get out of it. He's a great student and always applies himself, studies well and as I mentioned earlier he was on the dean's list last year. Is there something he can fill out that might give him a better idea of what he's suitable for or would enjoy doing? In case you're wondering he's spoken with his nursing advisor.....got nowhere. It's a shame because he'd have made a great nurse, and loved his clinicals at the hospital. Got any ideas?

Is there a survey you can take to determin what career is right for you?

Reply:I think you should ask your son to stay put. If he is really good he’ll come out with fyling colors. Just to give and idea of how many jobs there are waiting for your son, have a look at http://www.cvtips.com/nurse_career_emplo... the oppurtunites are immense. If your son likes what he is doin , let it be , everything else will take its own course

All the best
Reply:There should be careers advisors at his college. Alternatively he could seek advice from his personal tutor and if he/she can't help, they should refer him for professional careers counselling. As he is at college this ought to be free of charge (at least in the UK it would, but obviously you are in the US). However, I am pretty sure even if you have to pay for it, it is comparatively reasonable and should be well worth it if it helps your son find the right career path for him.
Reply:He needs to go and talk to his adviser. They have places that they can send him ---cost about $300, and they will do an in depth analysis on his likes and dislikes, and what he is best suited for.

The military has something too. That might be an option. They can let him finish his education and even pay for it...all he has to do is sign up for 6 years.
Reply:The Strengthsfinder asks questions, then determines your strengths and makes suggestions for careers. I don't know if you can do it for free or not, but you could check around on the Internet. You usually need the code from the book, "Now, Discover Your Strengths."
Reply:At my college, there is an office called career centers. They offer free or little charge "career/interest surveys". Also, if this is not an option, have him speak to an adviser. They are full of good info and helpful insight. Also, try www.tickle.com. This website if FULL of FREE tests to help you just figure out what you like and who you are. It's frustrating as a student to not know if what you are doing is the right major. I can only imagine being a parent trying to fund a college education. Good luck. Email me if you need anything else. Oh yeah, don't forget Physical therapists and occupational therapists and respiratory therapists. All great jobs, too.

Will someone take my career survey (it's for an Econ. project)?

Hi. I was wondering if anyone is willing to take a survey regarding their career/job. I have a project for Economics class (high school) where I need to interview people about their jobs. There'll be questions like "What do you do? What are the educational requirements for your job? Salary? Obstacles? Advice?" (both positive and negative) This will remain ANONYMOUS. I don't need your names or anything. If it's possible, I'd like to email the questions out since it'll probably be too long to post here (don't worry, I won't spam you!)

Also, you won't have to feel obligated to answer all the questions if you're not comfortable answering some of them.

If anyone has time and is willing to help out, I will really really appreciate it ^__^

Career Survey Question Thingyy?! help!?

Ok.. I'm in grade 10 right now and I have to choose my grade 11 classes next week.

I don't know what to do because I have nooooo idea what career I want to pursue. I like alot of different things but I don't want to settle for something when I'm fifteen.

My brother took a survey online to give him career options and my dad suggested I do the same, but none of us know the name of it.

There are probably a couple different ones, but I was wondering if anyone could give me the name of one that you know of or have found useful.

Thank-you!

Most schools use KUDER but they have to pay a fee each year and there is no way to get on the site unless you already have an ID and password set up.

Don't get caught up in the pressure of feeling like you have to select your career and plan your life right now. Talk to your high school guidance counselor and find out what basic courses are required to get you into most American universities. Typically this includes a couple of foreign language credits, along with the appropriate amounts of math, science, and so on. As long as you have these credits under your belt, and you keep your grades up, you will have no problem getting into the college of your choice.

Perhaps in the next year you may discover what it is your would like to pursue, and if not, that's okay too. Some people take a year or two off between high school and college to get some work experience, save up some money, and decide what they would like to do. Other people simply enroll in general studies for their first couple of collegiate years, until they find something they would like to major in.

Your guidance counselor may also be able to help you in finding some sort of career assessment test, similar to the one your brother took.

Finally, when thinking about a career choice, consider your current hobbies and interests. You may be able to parlay the things that you like to do into a career. The most important thing is that you find something that makes you happy.

Women's roles in home and career survey?

What do you feel should be women's roles when it comes to career and the home? When home and career conflict, which do you think should take priority?

You can answer here or, if you wish, do so here: http://www.tigersurvey.com/survey.php?su...

Either way works, the survey is just easier to calculate data from.

(I am aware I have posted this question in 2 sections, I have done so to get a more varied response)

Women's roles in home and career survey?
i wouldnt be able to accurately take the survery, it only asks for male or female answers.
Reply:I think a woman should choose what she wants to do. I grew up in a way too traditional Sicilian household where none of my aunts worked or even my mom- they were all housewives. They seemed so content and happy- But I chose a career and so did my sister. If I have children I will stay home until they can go to school. But I think a woman should choose what she wants to do. I see value in being a housewife as well as in having a career. If they conflict- I would work less- maybe switch to part time because for me family and a good home life are top priority.
Reply:I think that women are just as good as men at any thing and every thing. Definately better at some things. Women should have whatever role they want in the home and have any career they choose. If a woman wants to be an auto machanic then thats fine. It does not matter. As long as every thing gets done it doesnt matter who does it. People say that women are more sensetive than men. Well thats not really true. I know some men who gag, Whine, cry and just get totally disqusted with changing a babies diaper or washing a dish with wet soggy food on it. Its quite funny. But any way I do think that women should get all the smart jobs because well lets face it women are smarter than men.
Reply:well when i first met my now husband i was working at a deli //bakery and at the end i was spending my whole check in gas at 5. 75 and hour and she reduced my hours to 12 a week ..he said that if i would stay home and keep his clothes clean and the house and the food cooked he would work pay all the bill and support me ... so I stay at home and do what he wants me to do and I am happy like this It been three years and all is fine still....I do have a little shop at home where i sell stuff out of a little place behind my house and i love my life like this
Reply:I'm a sahm mom to 4.I do most everything around here except the yard and garbage. My husband rotates shifts...2 weeks on days and 2 on nights....when he's on days he does bathe the kids and help with homework while I cook.

But now he will do anything I ask him to do..I just rarely ask.I have a problem asking since he works allday.

Now when I have worked in the past everything is split just about equal =)
Reply:i am a stay at home mom, i would not have it any outer way. I feel I am need more at the home to take care of my son then working and having to pay for daycare. But there are some that do work and take care of there kids and home and I think that is great for them, not everyone can do that.

Career Class Survey?
Person's Career Technical Writer

Age 36, Female

(This isn't my present career - I'm currently a grad student. But I was a writer for about 12 years so I'll provide answers for that career.)

1) Which part of your life style: family, friends, leisure activites, spiritual well-being, or career is most important?

Spiritual well-being is most important because without that, nothing else is in balance. It is the foundation on which all other things rest.

2) Which of the five parts do you wish you could get greater satisfaction from than you do now: friends, leisure activites, spiritual well-being, or careers?

Friends and careers.

3) How does your career affect the other four parts of your lifestyle?

My career provides enough time for me to pursue the other parts of my lifestyle.

4)What caused you to choose your present career?

A friend of mine recommended it to me. The pay was good and it was stable so I continued.

5)How often have you changed careers? Are you interested in changing it in the future?

Once. I used to do administrative work about 13 years ago. I've branched out into more multimedia, web developer, and web design work recently. I am going back to graduate school to do learn to do more video/film, new media work so that I will not have to be a technical writer again. I love writing, but hate technical manuals.

6)Aside from the money, what gives you a sense of satisfaction with your career?

Nothing. This is why I am leaving. But in an ideal career, I would like to impact people's lives and make a positive change. It is also very important to me that I be able to be creative.

7) What, if anything, could you have done in the past to make your work more satisfying with your career?

Not settled for the first job that came along. Took more risks earlier. Chosen the major that was in my heart (radio television and film) rather than the one that was the easiest (speech communication).

8) What advice do you have for me as I choose and prepare for a career?

Take time to get to know yourself - your strengths and your weaknesses. Try a lot of different things - don't be afraid to fail. Spend more time on internships, coops, projects, than worrying about getting a 99 instead of a 92 on a paper. The quickest way to learn what you want to do is by trying and failing (or succeeding). Cherish your friends and college relationships - they will be there for you long after college is gone hopefully. If you want to get married - make it a priority in your life, but don't be consumed by it. Don't be afraid to take risks. If you want to travel or spend a year abroad before you settle into the work world, do it. Take care of your health. Don't do something just for the money. Think about what you do best and then think about how you can be profitable doing it - but don't take something you hate just because the salary is high. Don't sacrifice your relationships or health for your career - because the company can cut your position in a heartbeat if you don't contribute to the bottom line. Whatever you do, start investing early. Take advantage of your company's 401K. Get good enough grades that you can get into grad school if you decide to go. Get recommendations from professors before you leave school - have it put on file so that you can use it in case you want to further your education. Don't get so tied up with choosing the right job that you don't make any decisions at all. After all, you can always quit and get another one. And finally - but this probably should have been first - put God first in all that you do.

All the best,

C
Reply:Salesman 26yrs old male

1)career - its what pays the bills, family is great but they dont pay the bills

2)career

3)no time for friends, little time for family, really don't do the spiritual thing

4)hurricane katrina, only job i could get close to home

5)have changed careers twice, maybe interested in cahnging it in the future

6)helping someone get what it is that they need and not just sell them something that is overpriced

7)stayed in school

8)make sure your job is something that you enjoy, and whatever you do always keep a sense of awareness about your co-workers. i've learned that most people will do anything to get a step up, including making you look bad.
