Can I get a teacher to fill out this quick survey?

4. First day at my school was crazy - they didn't even have a building read for us at that time.


5. Working with the kids (most enjoyable) - dealing with adults (administrators that micro-manage) the worst.


6. Just set barriers that you wont cross and figure out what you are comfortable with - don't take to your home.


7. Remember that you are the most important assest in that classroom you are teaching to those kids. I would also say that you don't have to control the kids - you need to only maintain a place for learning.

My first day was a blur...I remember what I was wearing. I remember getting there three hours early and I spent so much time coming up with the syllabus that I didn't even have anything to teach! I didn't think about the kids at all...only than damn syllabus, which nobody understood since they didn't speak English! We all sat around and stared at each other. It was bad. The next day I came armed with pictures and a plan!


What I enjoy most is seing really quiet kids come in on the first day with no English, and by the end of the year, I have to get on them for talking because they've learned so much.


What I hate....testing. We do too much of it. I also hate to be in the halls and hear all of the loud and disrespectufl comments from students who are not in my classes.


My tips for balancing life...I NEVER take work home. Ever. If you start doing that, you'll never spend time with your family. When school is over, it's over. If the kids have to wait a few days to get the test back, then they wait. In the long run, I'm a better teacher because my personal life is a priority.


I would recomend you do a LOT of internships at different grade levels. A lot of people say they hate elementary, or hate older kids or whatever...but you never truly know until you try it. So intern, observe, and intern again! Some people think they'll make a good teacher, and they realize they don't have the patience.

4. It was truly a hectic day and I loved every single moment of it. The students sensed that I was a new teacher. So, they tried to sit on my head and for a while they were successful. However, I managed to regain control of my classroom after nine weeks.


Also, English is my second language for I was born in Eastern Europe. The students, seeing that I was a foreigner began to pretend that they could not understand my accent. Never the one to back down from a fight I decided to beat them at their own game. So, for few minutes while introducing myself it just happened to slip out that I was a member of the Polish Krowkosy Mafia. Upon letting it slip out, I described how certain students in Poland who did not heed to my warnings mysteriously disappeared. Needless to say, that got their attention. I had to break their little hearts by telling them I was just tasting them to see if they could understand me. They understood my message right away especially after I told them, “those of you who want an A will find a way to understand me.”


There was also a fight in my classroom during my first day of school. Apparently, two nine graders wanted to sit next to this girl. Lets call them Frank, Henry and Lisa. Frank dated Lisa and Henry wanted to date her, too. Nonetheless, Frank was not ready to let her go and when he heard Henry asking her out, he flipped out. Hence, they began to fight. I quickly separated them, but Henry punched me while I was trying to pull Frank of him. When I intervened I observed most of that blow. Needless to say, I was not happy at that moment.


5. I love working with kids and I know I was born to teach. It is rewarding sitting after school with a student helping him/her to grasp the material that was not understood during class. To see the expression on my students faces when they grasped the material to me this is a priceless moment.


I loathe the fact that parents expect me to raise their children. Hence, dealing with the parents is the only part of my job that I hate.


6. Since, I am currently single I can't offer you any advice. But I can assure you that it is doable. If it was not we would not have any teachers.


7. Be yourself. Don't think that you can change the world. If you see a student that does not understand the material, then keep explaining it to him/her until the cows come home. Once, it took me 10 times to explain the material to one of my students when the rest of his classmates understood the material. All the students were making fun of him and he was extremely embarrassed. However, after about 15 minutes he finally understood the subject that was discussed. I was nonetheless; upset at how my students have acted and I gave them a pop quiz the following day. Guess what, this particular student got 9.5/10 and he had the second highest grade on the pop quiz. What shocked me the most was the fact that out of 32 students 13 failed the quiz, only two students got A’s, there were no C’s and the rest got B’s. I really thought that all of the students would get A’s and B’s on the pop quiz. This goes to show don’t let other students make fun of anyone. If they do give them a pop quiz the next day. That way you will truly see who is being a smart ****

5. seeing the ideas take hold- I hate the administrative tasks, committee work, meetings, etc. I hate dealing with students in trouble.


6. Just do it. Set some priorities. Tell your children to only call you at work if someone is bleeding.


7. Think about whether you really can handle the job. If you aren't willing to do your best don't do it. I have colleagues who really don't care.

4. What was your first day of teaching like?


Very well (it was the 8th gr. LA) - I worked with a mentor to develop a good first day game plan. The best thing I did was go around and shake everyone's hand and teach each student how to have a firm handshake. It broke the ice.





5. What do you most enjoy and most loath about your job?


I enjoy most those a-ha moments when a student "gets it" and I loath any BS that keeps your from doing your job as best you can - either from the gov't, the admin., or the parents.





6. Do you have tips for balancing family/school lives?


Pick one day a week to be your "late" day at school, and don't stay late any other day. Get organized when you can, and don't worry about the messy desk if you can't. Don't reinvent the wheel - I spent a lot of time "creating" stuff that now I realize I could have just used something premade.





7. Recommendations to an anspiring teacher?


Use the resources around you - helpful parents, mentor teachers. Never ever be afraid to ask for help - you will look far more capable if you reconginze your inexperience rather than try to fumble through things. And never come across to your peers as a know it all. When discussing ideas - ask if an idea has been tried before, just don't assume that your ideas are new and great. And if it has, ask why it didn't work and would they consider trying it again.

5. I enjoy helping students that struggle in mathematics. I love to hear OH, I get it. What I loath is the fact that even after 11 years I am working on classroom discipline.


6. Because I teach high school, I include my daughters in the activities that I go to. They feel special and I get to do what I need to do.


7. If you are still in school, create study groups. Even if you do not need them, they help you learn how to explain concepts that you will eventually need to teach. If you are not, tutor. Same reason. I do suggest that if you are not a fairly organized person, become one. You never want to lose a students paper or worse your lesson plan for the day.
